Tall ship experience and training has long been recognized as an unequalled means of positive character development. Acheson Ventures has brought Highlander Sea to Port Huron to provide the tall ship experience to as many area residents as possible. Since its inception in 2002, the volunteer program for Highlander Sea has grown and flourished with people from the Port Huron area and beyond. All of the Highlander Sea programs depend on her enthusiastic volunteers who have recognized the importance of this undertaking. We look forward to welcoming you as an intricate part of Highlander Sea.
Welcome Center Greeter
Located at the Elevator Lobby 4-hour shift(s)
A volunteer greeter will be stationed at the indoor reception desk, sell logo merchandise and tickets, and occasionally head out to the overlook deck to chat with visitors viewing the ship. This volunteer should be familiar with the local area and a ´people person.´ We will provide training for ship familiarization.
Ship´s Interpreter/Tour Guide
4-hour shift(s)
This volunteer is not necessarily a hearty, able sailor, but rather a ´people person´- that is, someone who is outgoing and comfortable speaking in public. This volunteer has a passion for history, sailing vessels and maritime lore, and will strive to engage visitors in an interesting, accurate and fun tour of Highlander Sea. This volunteer is willing to learn, study and help us create and fine-tune a formal ship´s tour. It would also be helpful if she/he could quickly size up an audience and tailor the tour appropriately to the audience. Training will be provided.
Apprentice Deckhand
4-hour and 8-hour shift(s)
We are seeking able hands for the ship´s daily and/or winter maintenance work-- four-hour shifts (8am -12noon, 1pm-5pm). Previous sailing experience is not required, just a desire to learn. Lunch will be provided on full days. Activities on board will include daily cleaning and maintenance, training sessions and sail training. Experience aboard (the number of shifts worked) will determine your position on the day sail call up list.
Your skills and knowledge level will be tracked and rated to allow for advancement of rank (to Ordinary Seaman, Ordinary Seaman advanced, Able-Bodied Seaman etc.).
Education Program Tour Guide

In May, June, September and October, Mondays- Fridays, we provide ship ´Station Tours´ to area school groups. These volunteers relate well to kids and can tailor fun and engaging tours. Ship station tour training provided.
Education Program Classroom Ambassador
1-hour classroom shift with 2- hour shipboard shift(s)
This volunteer will visit the student classroom a few days prior to group´s ship-board tour to familiarize them about the ship.
